Why a win in Albania will hit the spot in this Thurso boozer

SCOT GEMMILL knows all about growing up in a famous footballing family.

And he reckons Aberdeen ace Lewis Ferguson has massively benefited from being immersed in the game from a young age.

Ferguson has quickly made a huge impression at Pittodrie since his summer move from Hamilton with vital goals against Rangers and Burnley as well as some fine midfield displays.

That has already prompted some to demand the 19-year-old to be fast-tracked into the full Scotland squad.

But for now, Ferguson will spend this week in the south of Spain with Gemmill’s Under-20s squad before they face Turkey on Saturday night in Murcia.

Ferguson’s dad Derek starred for Rangers and Hearts among others while uncle Barry skippered both Gers and Scotland.

Gemmill can easily relate to growing up in a BY MARK WALKER football-obsessed environment, with father Archie scoring Scotland’s most famous ever goal when he slalomed past Dutch defenders to net in the 1978 World Cup.

And he thinks Ferguson is fortunate to grow up with such a pedigree. He said: “His background gives him an advantage in terms of mentality and advice.

“I was lucky to have a famous father too. I can really be confident he will have had a solid upbringing in terms of football and having the correct attitude. You’re starting to see that.

“There’s no doubt how valuable it is. When you’re immersed in it and you’re part of it then it feels completely normal. But only now I can look back and see it.

“Lewis has already scored a couple of really high-profile goals. He has started really strongly at Aberdeen and has shown he can help the team.” BILLY GILMOUR netted twice to hand Scotland a winning start to their Under-19 European Championship qualifying campaign.

The Chelsea teenager scored a late penalty to secure a 2-1 win over Wales, having earlier handed the Scots the lead in Rhyl.

Liverpool ace Neco Williams equalised for Wales after 68 minutes and the game looked to be heading for a draw. But Rangers youngster Dapo Mebude, a second-half sub, was bundled over in the box and Gilmour fired home from the spot to win it.
