Dons form Gothenburg Great bond at the back

- BY SCOTT BURNS

JOE LEWIS knows Aberdeen’s defence are on the road to success if they’re being compared to the Gothenburg Greats.

The Pittodrie No.1’s strong partnership with Scott McKenna and Mikey Devlin has provided the foundation for the Dons’ recent revival and push into the top six.

And Lewis admits they are on the right track if they’re being likened to legends Jim Leighton, Alex McLeish and Willie Miller who conquered Real Madrid in the Cup Winners’ Cup Final in 1983.

Lewis said: “What they achieved was fantastic. If we’re mentioned in the same bracket as those three then we’re doing something right.

“We’ll keep working on that relationship we’re building. I’m fortunate to have two defenders like that playing in front of me.

“Scotty and Mikey have formed a good relationship and understanding. Hopefully that’s showing in performances and the longer we stay together as a group, we can grow.”

McKenna and Devlin’s form has earned them Scotland call-ups for the UEFA Nations League double-header with Albania and Israel.

While Devlin is yet to win a cap, Lewis has no doubt he has what it takes to become a regular for his country.

Lewis said: “Scotty has had a lot of press and rightly so because he’s a brilliant young player.

“Mikey is an excellent young defender and is willing to learn.

“He’s a quick learner and like a sponge. He’ll be better for the experience. I’d love to see them play together for Scotland.”
