When should the future begin?
The National Audit Office yesterday raised some important questions around the progress of Britain’s smart meter rollout.
To be frank, a rollout that hasn’t been as smooth as we’d have liked. But it’s a rollout that is vital to the future of Great Britain’s energy infrastructure.
Smart meters are crucial in helping us tackle climate change and reduce our carbon footprint. Potentially they’ll help us save a staggering 29.7 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030. That’s the equivalent of taking 600,000 cars off the road.
And they’re already making a difference. Millions of households are benefitting from a smart meter. Eight in ten people have taken steps to reduce their energy use and around three quarters would recommend one today.
There’s no time like the present.
With the demand for electricity in the UK expected to rise by around a fifth between 2015 and 2035, our cities will need more and more energy.
Currently more than 8 million people in Britain are considering buying or leasing an electric vehicle in the next 5 years.
So, it’s important that we upgrade our existing energy grid and infrastructure in order to be able to cope with the future demand. Smart meters play an essential role in this upgrade.
So when should the future begin?
We believe it starts right here. Right now.
