Tony’s still big fan favourite despite run

-

THE goals might have dried up but the cheers certainly haven’t. And Tony Watt is loving life at St Johnstone.

The former Celtic striker hasn’t netted since his winner against Dundee at the end of August although fans have still been dishing out standing ovations.

But Watt admits his dad had to tell him about them. He said: “My dad mentioned it because I didn’t notice it.

“Against St Mirren I just wanted off the pitch because I had missed chances so I had my head down and got off pretty quick. But I’ve noticed it in the other games and it’s brilliant.

“Usually as a striker you have to score to get that sort of reaction from the fans so it’s been really good.

“The supporters have seen what I’ve been doing BY GORDON BANNERMAN and I appreciate the backing they’ve given me.”

As Saints look to extend a five-game winning sequence to overhaul Kilmarnock, Watt believes he has become more of a team player under Perth boss Tommy Wright.

“I’m going home buzzing and even on a Sunday I’m still on that high.

“That’s something I missed a lot and although I didn’t fall out of love with football I’m definitely back more in love with it again since coming here.

“In the past I probably would have been going home banging down doors and kicking things but I genuinely haven’t been doing that.

“I came here with my eyes on St Johnstone not my next move.

“I don’t need to score 20 goals or 40 goals to get a transfer somewhere, it’s about being part of a team winning games.

“Against St Mirren that was the day I could have gone home in the huff but I just thought to myself, ‘Don’t be so daft, we won’.

“It’s not about me. I have had assists lately and the manager has said he’s happy with the work I’m putting in for the team.

“Of course I want to get back scoring again but if we’re winning games then it’s fine.

“I can feel myself getting better with games and I think I can still kick on.”
