TOP STATE SCHOOL IS REVEALED
Edinburgh school is top state secondary
BOROUGHMUIR High in Edinburgh has been named Scottish state secondary school of the year.
It was ranked third overall in the list compiled by Parent Power, The Sunday Times Schools Guide 2019, which is gathered using recent examination results.
At Boroughmuir, which takes the title for the second time in six years, almost three quarters (74 per cent) of students gained five or more Highers.
Jordanhill School in Glasgow maintained its place at the top of the table, with 81 per cent of pupils gaining five or more Highers.
The other three schools in the top five are in East Renfrewshire, with St Ninian’s in second place, Williamwood fourth and Mearns Castle ranked fifth.
Alastair McCall, of Parent Power, said: “Boroughmuir’s second triumph in six years is testimony to the sustained levels of excellence that now pass for the norm at this school. Students and teachers alike should be congratulated for their outstanding efforts.”
St Leonard’s in St Andrews, Fife, won The Sunday Times Scottish Independent Secondary School of the Year award.
It is the only Scottish independent school to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) in the sixth form. Students this summer saw 76.5 per cent of their IB Higher Level outcomes return grades of 7, 6 and 5 – the equivalent of A*, A and B at A-level.
A sharp upturn in the proportion of grades achieving A*/A/9/8/7 grades at GCSE also contributed to the school’s success.
Fettes College in Edinburgh is ranked top of the independent schools in Scotland studying for A-levels, GCSEs and IB, while Merchiston Castle, also in Edinburgh, is third.
