Which supermarket will save you most on Christmas dinner?

-

BY MARIA CROCE CHRISTMAS dinner will cost more this year because of Brexit and the weather.

Of the 10 main supermarkets, Aldi come out cheapest when it comes to totting up the cost of festive meal favourites. Their basket costs £26.43 for a family of eight – £3.30 per head.

Good Housekeeping (GH) compared the price of 11 Christmas dinner items, including turkey.

Lidl were in second place, with a basket worth £28.22 and Asda came in third at £31.24.

The cost of Christmas dinner on the whole is up nearly six per cent, although three of the shopping baskets are cheaper than they were last year.

The Co-op’s Christmas dinner staples are £1.76 cheaper, Sainsbury’s basket is £2.09 less and at Morrisons, you’ll save £2.99.

Lidl, who were last year’s winners, have added £2.69 to the cost of their basket. Tesco’s went up by £2.95, and Aldi’s is 75p more.

6. Morrisons £33.24 7. Iceland £34.33 8. Sainsbury’s £34.50 9. M&S £39.22 10. Waitrose £43.98

GH consumer affairs director Caroline Bloor said: “The extreme weather at the beginning of the year and the summer heatwave meant yields of crops were much lower than usual.

“This, coupled with the weakened pound following the Brexit vote, means food prices increased this year across the board – and consumers are footing part of the bill.

“There are still plenty of bargains to be had with competition at an all-time high between retailers. But consumers may need to be willing to shop around.”
