Stand-in will make his Mark

-

MOTHERWELL are shattered they have lost Trevor Carson for the season after his blood clot scare.

But they reckon they have the perfect back-up keeper in Mark Gillespie as they try to stop the Celtic juggernaut at Fir Park tonight.

Carson has been told he will need six months to fully recover after suffering deep vein thrombosis.

Centre-back Tom Aldred said: “It’s devastating news. We’ve lost a great character in the dressing room and a top keeper, one of the best I have played in front of.

“So it’s frustrating but first and foremost I’m just happy he’s alive and well and able to recover.

“Thankfully he has his health and hopefully he will come back next season.

“In Mark we’ve someone who has come in and done very well. He has big gloves to fill but will be determined to take the opportunity.”

Stephen Robinson is just thankful he was able to sign a player of Gillespie’s quality in the summer.

The Motherwell boss said: “I’ve stated before it’s about Trevor’s health, that’s all that’s important.

“We’re just happy he’s on the road to recovery and on the right medicine.

“Mark has stepped in and been excellent. I always thought if Trevor went in the summer I knew I had another No.1 keeper on our hands.

“We aren’t a club that can run with two No.1s in terms of finances but we had to because there was a lot of interest in Trevor. Now we’re being rewarded as we’ve got a very good keeper who has stepped in.”

Robinson is demanding a reaction from his players after flopping at Livingston.

He said: “It was very disappointing considering how high we had set our standards. We’ll go with a gameplan as we always do against Celtic and make life uncomfortable for them.”
