5 natural ways to beat that hangover

-

BY MAX FREEMAN-MILLS HEADACHES and nausea are common side-effects of the Christmas party season.

Here are five natural remedies to help you cope with a hangover. You’ll know about this one, but we bet you haven’t adhered to it.

Even relatively light drinking leads to dehydration, causing headaches, fatigue and lack of energy. When you wake up feeling rough, drinking a glass of water should be top of your to-do list.

Even better, remember to drink some water before going to bed. Ginger has long been used as an anti-nausea treatment.

A cup of ginger tea the morning after a heavy night could be a cheap way of hitting two birds with one stone. You’ll be replenishing some of that much-needed water and also getting an important shot of stomach-calming ginger. Even if you don’t have much of an appetite the morning after drinking, eating is vital, because alcohol consumption hits your blood glucose levels hard.

Granola with sliced fruit can give you a hit of natural sugars and valuable vitamins. Bananas and avocados, which contain potassium, are also good for recovering electrolytes. You might struggle to find one in the UK, but this cactus fruit has been found to reduce nausea, dizziness and headaches.

If you want to try it out, look for a supplement called Hovenia Dulcis extract. There is no substitute for sleep. Whether the night has gone on until the small hours, or drinking has impaired your ability to sleep, the downsides to even light sleep deprivation are significant.
