Barry stunned Dons boss not in demand down south

-

BARRY FERGUSON is delighted to see nephew Lewis spearhead an Aberdeen surge and admits he’s amazed Derek McInnes hasn’t been prised away from Pittodrie.

The Dons have won four of their last five to sit three points off top spot with Ferguson one of the key players in their revival.

The Aberdeen gaffer has rejected offers from Sunderland and Rangers in recent seasons and Ferguson said: “I’m surprised he hasn’t gone to a bigger club.

“No disrespect to Aberdeen but I’m surprised no one in the Premier League has looked at him. They were flirting with relegation when he went there and they’ve finished second in the league just about every year since. At Aberdeen he needs to rebuild every year because he always loses his best players in the summer.

“He signed Lewis this season and he’s playing really well. It’s a step up from Hamilton because there is a bit of pressure when you play for Aberdeen.

“For such a young age he’s done really well. But I’m not surprised because I knew what type of boy he is. He’s my nephew after all.

“Take away his goal against Rangers in the Betfred Cup semifinal and all his strikes have been exceptional. Goals was something he needed to add to his game.

“When he played the same position at Accies he never really scored. But he’s gone to Aberdeen and handled the pressure.”
