Jozo wants leaders to make the gap bigger

- BY MICHAEL GANNON

JOZO SIMUNOVIC has warned Celtic’s Premiership title challengers they are determined to surge clear at the summit.

The Hoops regained top spot with Wednesday’s 3-0 win against Motherwell – the sixth time the lead has changed hands this month.

And Simunovic said: “We are completely focused on domestic matters. We have to be smart to put a gap between ourselves and second place.

“We want to widen the gap and be further ahead at the top of the table – that is definitely the goal.”

Simunovic insists Celtic can keep their foot on the gas despite a brutal injury list. The Croat is aware Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers will look to bolster his squad but he said: “That is a question for Peter Lawwell or Brendan Rodgers.

“We need a big squad and we have shown we have players to fill the gap. Ryan Christie a month ago was on the bench but since then we came on and showed he can play.

“For sure there will be others who can come in and show they can play.”

Simunovic is relishing a return to the side following Boyata’s absence and he is making the most of his defensive partnership with Croat pal Filip Benkovic.

And his former Dinamo Zagreb teammate is hoping Leicester are not tempted to call him back in January.

Simunovic said: “For both of us it would be very good if he stays. We are good company and if he leaves he will be bored.

“He is playing well and growing up well. This is the right step for him because it isn’t easy to play for Celtic.

“He is going to build his performances and confidence the longer he stays here.

“If he stays longer it will be better for him.”
