£6k GERS FINE

- BY GAVIN BERRY

RANGERS will continue with their push for a rule change after being slapped with a £6000 fine for two of the five SFA charges against the club.

Hampden compliance officer Clare Whyte hit the Light Blues with a lengthy notice of complaint after an Ibrox statement savaging referee Willie Collum for last month’s dismissal of Daniel Candeias against St Mirren.

The Portuguese winger was sent off after Collum issued a second yellow card for blowing kisses at

Anton Ferdinand while celebrating victory in Paisley.

Rangers were hit with five charges but following a Hampden hearing were found guilty of “indicating bias or incompetence” on the part of a match official and not “acting in the best interests” of the game.

The club have accepted fines of £5000 and £1000 respectively but will continue to lobby for a rule change that prevents clubs appealing second yellow cards in cases other than simulation and mistaken identity.

The Ibrox club attempted to appeal the controversial Candeias red card on the latter and SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell revealed last month talks have started over a rule change that would need to be rubberstamped at the SFA agm in June.

Rangers yesterday said in a statement: “We are pleased the majority of charges raised against the club have been dismissed.

“We remain convinced the second yellow and red card issued to Daniel Candeias was mistaken and should have been rescinded.

“But it seems clear that for a red card issued after a second yellow to be rescinded in circumstances where an obvious refereeing error has occurred will require a change to the rulebook.

“Rangers will be pressing for that change to be made and would hope that the SFA would support this request.”
