Merry Christmess

Nasty neighbour sends card to Annette with message saying her lights are ’tacky, gaudy and an assault on the eyes’

- BY JACK AITCHISON

A GRINCH sent a cheeky card to a gran branding her Christmas lights display an “assault on the eyes”.

Annette McDonald, 55, put lights up outside her home and in her garden for her grandchildren to enjoy. Her display features a Santa and a colourful shooting star on the walls and fairy lights across the hedges, windows and doors.

But Annette was shocked and angry to receive a nasty note from a fellow resident in the Glenmore neighbourhood of Whitburn, West Lothian, slating the lights.

She found the card through the post and shared its contents in full on Facebook.

It said: “Please do something about your Christmas lights. We know you are new to the area but they’re tacky, gaudy and an assault on the eyes.

“The rope lights around the windows and door are awful and we’ve yet to figure out what the Santa’s supposed to be doing – maybe you could take a leaf out of your neighbour’s book. We walk our dogs round Glenmore and your lights are the worst of the entire estate. Less is more!”

Annette wrote: “I put my Christmas lights up for my grandchildren to enjoy – they are not there for you or anyone else. When their little faces light up...

“I find your card cowardly, rude and offensive. If you do not have the manners to approach me about your opinion, you don’t have the right to hide behind a card.”

Speaking to the Record, Annette added: “I was angry and upset that someone would take the time to write something like that. She doesn’t know us or our situation. What if I had depression, mental health issues or was simply a single parent trying to do my best?”

The Facebook post has received more than 1000 comments and 500 shares. And many people have defended Annette, urging her to put up more lights.

Susan O’Donnell said: “Some people forget the true meaning of Xmas.”

Elaine Walker added: “Your house looks brilliant. Please don’t let this bitter individual spoil your Christmas.”
