HENDO: WE’LL BE CHASING HIT RECORDS

-

LIAM HENDERSON reckons the League Two champions may have to go on a run reminiscent of Gretna’s to lift the trophy.

The defender has been part of an Edinburgh City side that has raced to the top of the table with 13 wins in 16 games.

Despite that Peterhead remain just five points off the summit having played one fewer game.

Henderson believes City would be romping clear in any other year but with the Blue Toon giving chase he expects it to go to the wire.

Gretna boast the highest points total for the fourth tier – 98 points in 2005.

Only Edinburgh still have a mathematical shot of surpassing that – if they win every remaining game from today’s trip to Cowdenbeath onwards.

And Henderson said: “The gaffer has said to us that in another season we would be flying eight or 10 points clear at the top.

“That just goes to show the standard being set. It could be a record-breaking league winner and we just need to keep our standards high and keep aiming for the next three points.

“Nothing has been won yet. We haven’t achieved anything yet, so we are all determined to keep up this momentum.

“If anything, the second half of the season is going to be even tougher.”

Henderson is adamant it would be foolish to look beyond a Cowden side on a five-match unbeaten run.

The 22-year-old was on loan there last year and is acutely aware of the pitfalls of a trip to Central Park in winter. He said: “It can be horrible. The pitch is tough to play on at this time of the year and with the surroundings and environment it’s just a really hard place to go.

“Rangers and Hibs used to find it tough when they were in the Championship so we’ll be taking nothing for granted.”

Indeed, Cowden gaffer Gary Bollan reckons home advantage could be key.

He said: “We have lost only one of our last five at Central Park so we should take confidence from that.”
