It’s a shame I can’t ask Brendan for help

Gerrard: I would have leaned on Rodgers for advice but derby rivalry makes it impossible

- BY GARY RALSTON

STEVEN GERRARD last night revealed he’s gutted he can’t ask Old Firm rival Brendan Rodgers for advice on how to be a better boss.

The Rangers manager insisted his former gaffer at Anfield would be the perfect sounding board as the Liverpool legend takes his first steps on the managerial ladder. But the intensity of life in Glasgow’s goldfish bowl makes it impossible for the ex-Reds captain and boss to discuss life in the dugout. Gerrard said: “As my former manager

he (Rodgers) would have been someone I leaned on.

“It is difficult to do that now. Because of the rivalry he would not want to tell me anything and I would not want to tell him anything.”

Gerrard has demanded one last push from Rangers as he ordered his players to ditch the Celtic fear factor. And he admits his side showed too much admiration for their opponents in their 1-0 defeat at Parkhead in September.

The Gers boss said: “My message to the players is, ‘One last push.’ I’m sure Brendan will deliver a similar message as their schedule has been just as brutal.

“I have told the players to leave everything out there.

“The key for me and a message to the players is, ‘Don’t freeze and have too much respect like you did the last time. Don’t sit back and wait for the game. Go and grab it. Go and seize the moment and the opportunity to express yourselves.’ I want the players to be excited about this fixture, not fearful.”

Gerrard will give several players the chance to prove their fitness this morning, including Ryan Kent, Scott Arfield and Gareth McAuley.

But central defender Conor Goldson is set to play through the pain barrier after picking up a knee injury in the Boxing Day draw against Hibs.

Meanwhile, Gerrard is relaxed about the future of Alfredo Morelos, who has admitted he’s anticipating bids next month. The boss added: “I’d be more surprised if there are no bids.”
