Heartbroken family in memorial vow that will benefit others in son’s name

-

BY JANE HAMILTON Crime Reporter A MEMORIAL fund is being set up by the family of tragic Shaun Woodburn to help disadvantaged youngsters.

The Shaun Woodburn Memorial Fund will support organisations or individuals, particularly in sports and recreation, across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

The announcement by Shaun’s dad, Kevin, comes as the family prepare to mark the second anniversary of the 30-yearold’s death.

Shaun was killed in the early hours of New Year’s Day 2017. His family now want to mark the occasion with a positive legacy.

Kevin said: “The main purpose of the fund is to raise money for organisations or individuals from Edinburgh and the Lothians for the purpose of advancing the needs of children and young adults up to the age of 21, particularly in sport and recreation.

“We would particularly like to support under- privileged children to advance in sport.”

He added: “We’ve already raised money from football matches and we will continue to arrange those with the help and support of some of the teams that Shaun was involved with.

“Lots more activities are planned that we will announce in the coming weeks.”

Kevin said he is putting together a board of trustees and will be in a position to apply for charitable status in early 2019.

He said: “Last year was incredibly difficult. This year will be no less heartbreaking but we wanted to focus on something positive that Shaun would have wanted 100 per cent.

“He was a fit young man and would help anyone, particularly children.

“This is a fitting way to create a lasting memorial to my son.”

Shaun’s teenage killer, Mohammed Ibnomer, recently lost his bid for freedom after applying for parole on December 21.

His appeal was denied and he must serve at least another 12 months in jail.

Shaun died after being attacked by Ibnomer, then 16, outside Gladstones pub in Leith, Edinburgh.

The Woodburn family have successfully won changes to protocols surrounding multiple post-mortems on victims of crime.

They are now campaigning for a Victim’s Commissioner for Scotland as well as for increased minimum sentence guidelines for culpable homicide and murder.

Kevin said: “We will help people in Shaun’s name and keep his memory alive. Nobody will forget the name Shaun Woodburn.”
