My dad died after being punched in the face.. and his attacker only received a £600 fine

- BY RECORD REPORTER

THE daughter of a DJ who died a fortnight after being punched has hit out after the attacker was fined just £600.

Nicola Nicoll described the punishment as “disgusting” and said she had lost faith in the justice system.

Her dad Derek Wilkie, 59, was punched in the face by Lyall Dick after he refused to play more music at the end of a birthday party.

Derek was punched so hard, his false teeth and his glasses broke, a court heard.

He had been taking the blood-thinning drug Warfarin for deep vein thrombosis in his left leg and his nose bled profusely after the assault.

Derek collapsed a week later and was rushed to hospital. He died a fortnight after the attack.

Dick assaulted Derek at a birthday party in Whins of Fordie, Perthshire, in September 2017. At Perth Sheriff Court last month, he admitted punching Derek. Dick also pled guilty to pushing Derek’s partner Jodie Hamilton and was fined a further £300.

Nicola said the fine given to Dick, 36, was “hugely disappointing”.

She added: “It’s never acceptable to raise your fists to anybody.”

Nicola spoke of the “devastating” effect that the loss of her dad has had on her family.

She added: “My daughter Maia and son Kellan are now without their papa.

“My dad was a big influence in their lives. The hardest part is being left with this gap.”

After his sentence, Dick, a construction worker, from Auchtermuchty, Fife, said he had nothing to add to what had been said in court.
