McNamara: Cal’s given sneak peak but there’s more to come

-

JACKIE McNAMARA reckons Celtic ace Callum McGregor has come of age – but warned he’s still to hit his peak.

The former Hoops defender and the midfielder’s agent always knew he was destined for the top having tried to sign the 25-year-old on loan when he was Partick Thistle manager.

McNamara has watched McGregor become a star for club and country but insists he will only get better.

He said: “Callum has come of age. I know I am biased towards him because I look after him but his performances and levels have made him so reliable.

“I tried to take him to Thistle but he had already agreed to go down to Notts County. You could see even then he could impact a game. He made it look so simple and he had great vision.

“He has become a big player for Celtic. He’s played defensive midfielder and also offers a real attacking threat.

“He is only 25 but he keeps getting better and better and is not even anywhere near his prime yet.”

Despite derby defeat McNamara, who will represent Scotland at the Star Sixes at the Hydro this weekend, believes Celtic will storm to the title.

He said: “Everyone thinks the league is a lot closer just now but I still think Celtic will win the league, no problem. They have a good team but I expect them to come out of the January window even stronger.”
