US starlet Harkes mulls over move to United
BY SCOTT BURNS DUNDEE UNITED have made a move to land out-of-contract DC United star Ian Harkes to help fire their title push.
The midfielder – son of former US captain John Harkes – is a free agent and is considering an approach from the Tannadice club.
The 23-year-old was a regular alongside Wayne Rooney having played 33 times as the Washingtonbased club made it to the play-offs last season.
United believe Harkes has the quality that can not only help them win promotion but make an impact in the Premiership.
And there wouldn’t be any work permit issues as he was born in England when his dad was playing with Derby.
The Tannadice club are also close to sealing a move for freed MK Dons midfielder Aidan Nesbitt while Morgaro Gomis is close to sealing a return.
But striker Craig Curran is set to leave United to pen a two-and-a-half-year deal with rivals Dundee.
It comes as new American owner Mark Ogren brings in new sporting director Tony Asghar to oversee transfer activity.
United boss Robbie Neilson reckons embracing a modern set-up shows their ambition.
He said: “People who are sceptical are clinging on to days gone by. It’s all big companies, sponsorship and ideas. That’s the way all clubs will go if they have real potential.”
