Burchill had Larsson, Sutton and Maloney for company, that’s why he’s urging Bhoys to buy hitmen

Odsonne Edouard. I’d like to see Celtic add another two to give him real competition for the rest of the season.

“You have to remember Edouard is still young. I know he cost big money but he has been chucked in to that main role and I’m not sure if he is the finished article and ready to be the main No.9 every week.

“It would be positive to have a couple of new strikers to help push him on and hopefully Griff will be back fit giving great competition up there.

“Celtic have got to strengthen. They were looking for a couple of signings in the summer and it didn’t quite work out then Dembele left late on.

“I’d be amazed if they didn’t come out the end of January in much stronger shape.”

Talent spotter Burchill has dozens of dossiers on frontmen from all over the globe and the Celtic targets have also crossed his radar. He said: “I’ve seen a fair bit of the two of them and both look the part.

“They are a similar mould. They’re both quick, athletic and strong. The pair are not dissimilar to Edouard in their style of play and both have a good touch and can finish.

“They are similar sizes and shapes. Brendan likes that style, players who are powerful, can hold it up and run the channels.

“You can see the profile he goes for in that they can be a focal point but they can also drop and build the play.

“Edouard prefers to play with someone else up top, he can drop deep or wide, he doesn’t attack the front post like a lot of strikers.

“He almost likes to drop off to the D and get the ball at his feet.

“He could work in tandem with either of those two – just like he did with Dembele. You might see the best of him when he has a penalty-box striker alongside him.”

Burchill reckons Rodgers needs to strengthen – but he should never be questioned.

The Celtic boss has come under fire from Hoops fans for the first time following last weekend’s disastrous Old Firm defeat to Rangers.

But Burchill insisted it’s bonkers to take aim at the trophy-laden gaffer.

And he has a sneaky feeling Rodgers might even see losing to Rangers as a positive.

He said: “I can’t believe some of the reaction. It’s crazy. That’s Scottish football for you – it’s all in or all out. One defeat and it’s panic stations.

“It’s ridiculous because you can’t question Rodgers at all.

“His record in Scotland is incredible but it’s also the performances and the way he has won trophies.

“You can’t say a bad word about him – he has been brilliant for Celtic. Even in the way he carries and conducts himself, he’s been nothing but fantastic.

“This is one hiccup. I don’t think he’ll be too bothered about it.

“As funny as it sounds, he might be quite happy in some ways. That’s the Old Firm record out of the way, it’s a monkey off his back and he can move on and concentrate on winning the remaining two trophies.

“Fans hate losing the Old Firm game but shouldn’t even contemplate the prospect of him not being manager.

“In the cold light of day, Celtic fans will realise it’s one bad result and he is the man to take the club forward.”
