Boozy Wayne is busted at airport in DC
WAYNE Rooney was arrested by armed airport police after becoming abusive while drunk in Washington.
The former England captain was taken into custody as he returned to the States from Saudi Arabia.
Bleary-eyed Rooney was later pictured in a police mug shot appearing to wear orange prison-issue clothing as he was held at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Centre, close to Washington Dulles Airport.
The footballer claimed his arrest on December 16 came after he was left “disorientated” by taking prescribed sleeping tablets on the flight while drinking.
His spokesman said last night: “During the flight, Wayne took a prescribed amount of sleeping tablets mixed BY CHRIS BUCKTIN with some alcohol consumption and consequently was disorientated on arrival.
“He was approached by police who arrested him on a minor misdemeanour charge. The matter is now at an end.”
The star’s arrest comes just four months after he moved to the US capital, where he joined DC United in the MLS from Everton on a £13million-a-year deal.
Rooney, who got a two-year ban in the UK for drink driving in 2017, paid a £20 fine plus £71.50 in costs on Friday in relation to his arrest.
He has promised to appear in court but it is understood the incident will not affect Rooney’s visa to work in the US.
DC United said: “This is a private matter for Wayne that DC United will handle internally.”
