CELTS CLOSE IN ON DUO

-

FROM BACK PAGE offer for the Ivory Coast attacker, the champions are close to concluding a swoop for 21-year-old.

Weah is also on the verge of sealing his transfer to Celtic on loan from PSG. The 18-year-old has been on the wanted list since making a secret trip to Lennoxtown to meet Rodgers during the first half of the season.

Weah is close to a sixmonth deal but the move has been placed on hold while the French giants organise a one-year contract extension for the attacker before sending him out on loan.

PSG and the American international have now reached agreement and Celtic hope to now get their move tied up.

The teenager could fly to Dubai for his medical and start training with the squad this week.

Burke will have his first training session with the group this morning and Mikey Johnston admits the squad is being boosted by new arrivals.

He said: “Seeing new players coming into the squad is a good thing for everyone at the club and the supporters.

“It provides healthy competition for all the ones there before and it keeps everyone working as hard as they can and pushing for the places.

“No one has ever won the league title after half a season so we are just kicking on now. Obviously there’s a bit more pressure on us with the league being tight. But we’ll just work as we always do and hopefully get the results we need.

“We’ve made a good start. We’re still top and have a game in hand so it’s going the right way.”

Meanwhile, Western Melbourne’s hopes of signing Scott Brown have been dealt a big blow.

The A-League’s newest club want the Celtic skipper as their marquee signing but have been denied funding assistance from Football Federation Australia.

The new club sought access to FFA’s marquee player fund to help partially cover Brown’s salary but the application has been rejected.

FFA are believed to want Western Melbourne to take the 33-year-old to the A-League but will not extend their backing into providing cash to get the deal over the line.

The application was one of more than 20 the governing body has received in the past year from clubs looking to access the marquee player fund controlled by the FFA in conjunction with broadcasters Fox Sports.

Melbourne Victory are the only club to have got financial assistance for their signing of Japanese star Keisuke Honda.
