Just going for a run in

BY SALLY HIND A WALKING car is one of the weird and wonderful inventions that have gone on show at an international tech conference.

The four-legged vehicle was built by South Korean car makers Hyundai, who hope it will help to save lives in disaster zones.

While the car has proved the biggest showstopper at the 2019 CES event, which is being held in Las Vegas this week, handy gadgets such as a foldable TV and a motorised suitcase have also caught the eye.

Hyundai said the Elevate vehicle has no rival when it comes to navigating tough, changeable terrain thanks to its ability to use either its wheels or extending legs.

The firm said it’s able to climb a 5ft wall and step over huge gaps to reach people in need during emergencies or natural disasters.

Hyundai’s vice-president John Suh said: “When a tsunami or earthquake hits, current rescue vehicles can only deliver first responders to the edge of the debris field – they have to go the rest of the way by foot. Elevate can drive to the scene and climb right over flood debris or crumbled concrete.” He said the car could also help to save the lives of road crash victims during dangerous weather, adding: “The possibilities are limitless.”

Among the other inventions unveiled is a £627 smart oven by Whirlpool, which can identify the type of food placed inside and cook it at the best temperature for the right length of time.

A smart ring capable of replacing a Fitbit is also on show, along with a Samsung health robot and a plant-based burger that fools meat-lovers into thinking it’s beef.
