I can buy anything I like but I still own my old house on the estate and I’d go back in a shot

loans them out for school proms for children on Trelander and elsewhere, and only asks for a donation to the MS Centre in return.

However, there are downsides to winning such a huge sum of money.

Peter and his family still get requests begging for money, running into hundreds of emails and letters.

Daughter Helen Venton, 48, said: “We had funny letters from the beginning – including one man who wanted a coffin for his own funeral.

“We received the first letter on the actual night of the win – a woman wanted help paying off her husband’s gambling debts.”

They have also received several requests from strangers asking if Peter would pay for family members’ weddings. One even arrived from Australia, having been simply addressed to “Peter Congdon, Lottery Winner, Truro, Cornwall”.

Helen added: “We’ve been on the other end, trying to find money for prom dresses, for example.”

Peter’s granddaughter Katie Venton, 29, who runs The Old Cheese Shop cafe in Truro’s Ferris Town, said: “How could we come from somewhere like Trelander and no one find out?

“I went from working at McDonald’s to suddenly driving a Range Rover.”

The giant cheque Peter received, with the full amount of £13,538,113 written on it, takes pride of place at his home beside the winning balls from the draw in lottery champagne glasses. He even has the numbers tattooed on his chest as a permanent reminder of his good fortune.

Speaking at the time of his win, Peter revealed he had won on National Lottery scratchcards on the three days leading up to his big success.

The winning numbers on the day were 12, 27, 28, 39, 41 and 48.

His ticket was purchased at the Trelander Post Office and Premier shop in the Quadrant in Trelander.

At the time, Peter spent £5 every day on scratchcards.

He said: “As I was collecting my scratchcard winnings on Wednesday, I bumped into someone in the shop who said, ‘Make sure you buy a Lotto ticket because if anyone wins that rollover, it’s going to be you.’

“I had two more similar comments that afternoon and they were right – it was definitely my lucky day.”
