Gerrard: We could have a striking new formation

- BY CRAIG SWAN

STEVEN GERRARD has hinted Rangers could line up in a different formation during the second half of the season.

The Ibrox side most often played with one up front in the first part of the campaign – with Alfredo Morelos operating as a lone striker.

But with the signing of Jermain Defoe, Gerrard has revealed fans could see a new-look style.

Midfielder Steven Davis has also been brought in and that will give the Liverpool icon further options.

The Rangers boss told the club website: “We’ve tried certain things.

“Jermain gives us the option of playing two up front, whether that be 4-4-2, a diamond, 3-5-2 – it gives us that luxury.

“Kyle Lafferty also does that, we can go with a target man and a smaller guy around him.

“Ryan Hardie has come into the picture. It has been nice to work with four quality forwards. We haven’t had that luxury so that has been really nice and a big positive.”

Gerrard has tipped Davis to hit the ground running.

The manager added: “In terms of Steven, I think he’ll take to it like a duck to water because he’s the type of midfielder that we like.

“He’s very similar to Scott Arfield in many ways, he can play as a 10, he can play as an eight or a six. So I think it will be a lot more smoother for Steven.

“When we use Jermain, if we use him with another forward, everyone else may have to adapt and evolve.

“It’s so exciting to have the option because we haven’t really had that.

“We’ve only had one or two ways of playing and we have tended to stick

with that.”
