Desperate Tories in tricky Nicky claim

- BY DAVID CLEGG

DESPERATE Tories last night tried to compare Sturgeon to shamed US president Richard Nixon over the growing Salmond scandal.

Acting Scots leader Jackson Carlaw made the remarks after the latest revelations about the First Minister’s chief of staff.

The Record reported yesterday that Liz Lloyd had told a former Salmond adviser she “suspected” a Scottish Government investigation was under way in late March last year.

The revelations raised fresh questions about who knew what and when.

Carlaw said: “The revelations that it was Liz Lloyd that initiated these discussions and then had a further meeting to discuss the issue again and all ahead of a meeting the First Minister then had on April 2 which left the First Minister unaware what the content was going to be.

“It stretches the bounds of all credibility. If it is true, the chief of staff was failing in her duty.

“If it is not then the First Minister was even more reckless in proceeding with the discussion.

“My advice to the First Minister would be if you behave like Richard Nixon you’ll end up with the same outcome as Richard Nixon.”

Nixon was forced to quit in 1974 after it emerged he lied over what he knew about a break-in at the Democrats’ Watergate HQ.
