Murray plans to fly home today to see wife Kim and family after his epic Australian Open defeat to Roberto Bautista Agut.

He said: “After Monday night the more likely option probably is to have the operation because if I had got smoked I would have been like, ‘S**t, I don’t want that to be the last match I play’.

“But because of the way the match went and how I finished it, I couldn’t have done any more.”

Option A is to have the op and almost certainly miss Wimbers while B is he endures the pain for the next few months then retires.

He said: “I would definitely play Wimbledon if I didn’t have the operation because my hip isn’t going to be much worse off after this – my hip is screwed anyway.

“If I took a few months off and didn’t play I could definitely get myself on the court to play Wimbledon one last time. I could be competitiv­e.”

Acknowledg­ing grass is a better surface for him he added: “Option B gives me the best chance of playing at Wimbledon.

“The first option makes my life a lot more comfortabl­e and enjoyable but potentiall­y means I never play again and also miss Wimbledon. So that’s what I need to decide.”
