NO BRAINER

Andy: I didn’t give new £60K-a-week, 5-year deal a second thought

- BY CARL ASKEW

ANDY ROBERTSON admits he didn’t need to think for a second about signing a bumper new five-year deal at Anfield.

Manager Jurgen Klopp joked the £60,000-a-week contract was signed in record time by a player who was born in Glasgow but “screams Liverpool”.

And Scotland skipper Robertson now hopes to shout a title success from the Merseyside rooftops as the Reds chase their first championship since 1990.

Liverpool came so close to ruling Europe last season only for Real Madrid to beat them 3-1 in the Champions League Final.

So Robertson wants to make sure they avoid more heartache by staying ahead of Manchester City in the race for Premier League glory.

The 24-year-old said: “As soon as the club came to me it was a no-brainer.

“I want to stay here so it was signed as quickly as that.

“This club demand trophies and too long has passed without one.

“So I hope to help bring another couple of trophies to Liverpool because the fans and the club demand it.

“We came close with the Champions League but it’s about taking that next step.”

Much has been made of Robertson’s meteoric rise from part-time football with Queen’s Park to the biggest stages in Europe. And the

former Dundee United and Hull star admits the last 18 months at Anfield have passed in a blur.

The Scot said: “It has been incredible. The captaincy for Scotland was massive and getting to the Champions League Final is something I will always remember. It was special.”

Gaffer Klopp is thrilled to have Robertson tied down for five years and said: “Of all the contract renewals I have been involved with, this one was done in almost record time.

“When we signed Andy I spoke a lot about his story, his journey and how much I loved it.

“I thought it pointed to the type of person and player he would be for us. He has exceeded these expectations.

“He might be from Glasgow originally but everything about him screams Liverpool.

“Our fans have fallen in love with him, he has fallen in love with them.”
