The 37-year-old has opted to hang up his boots and focus on lifting the League One side off the foot of the table.
And the gaffer is adamant it wasn’t a difficult decision.
McMenamin added: “I made the decision to stop playing last Sunday. Now it’s all about concentrating solely on coaching. I could have played on for another year but this is the right time.
“I’ve been handed this opportunity earlier than I expected and I need to devote all of my energy on managing the side.
“We are in a difficult position but there’s plenty of time to improve things and we’ll hopefully add a few new faces in the next couple of weeks.
“There’s enough quality at the club to ensure our fortunes improve so we need to get ourselves ready for a crucial second half of the season.
“The Aberdeen game takes care of itself. It will be a great experience so hopefully we can showcase the best of ourselves.”
