CUP SUCCESS CAN HELP GET US UP
MONTROSE v DUNDEE UTD
SAM STANTON knows promotion is Dundee United’s top priority – but he can’t help dreaming of a cup run too.
Stanton heads for Links Park as United bid to get past parttime Montrose in a break from the pressure of the title race.
Midfielder Stanton said: “We all know the league is the big thing, no doubt about it, but it’s very important we try to get a cup run. It’s for the supporters and the players that we want to progress. It can have so many positive effects.
“Thinking of May right now is a long way off obviously. But if we can take it one tie at a time who knows what we can do.
“I’m actually looking forward to going up to Montrose for this one. It’s early days in the competition but it’s up to us to do a professional job and get the right result.
“We know we’ll have a healthy travelling support who we want to keep happy and they’ll want us to go as far as we can as well.”
Stewart Petrie has urged his players to give a good account of themselves against United.
The Montrose boss said “The town is buzzing and we’re looking forward to a big crowd. Hopefully the players can enjoy the occasion and do ourselves justice.
“Of course United are favourites and they’ve got a class manager in Robbie Neilson.
“Their squad is littered with talented lads and we are massive underdogs. But if we can play at the top of our game and United are not at it, then we can give ourselves a chance.”
