15 MINUTES OF SCREAMS
Local heard cries from park after Libby vanished
A YOUNG woman’s “dark and eerie” screams were heard coming from a park shortly after missing university student Libby Squire was last seen.
A resident in Hull, who wanted to stay anonymous, said the cries rang out “seven or eight” times over a 15-minute period.
They said they then spotted a man running out of Oak Road playing fields – minutes away from Libby’s home.
Last night, a 24-year-old man was being questioned on suspicion of abducting the philosophy student.
Libby, 21, vanished after a club turned her away last Thursday for being too drunk.
Her pals put her in a taxi at 11.30pm but after being dropped off at their home, she didn’t go inside and wandered off.
Libby was seen
sitting on a bench about 300 yards from her house at 11.45pm. Police believe she was then on a road leading to the park at 12.09am.
It is thought officers fear she was abducted and dumped in the River Hull.
A resident said yesterday: “I woke at about 12.15am and there was a scream. It sounded like a woman’s scream towards the back of the park, where the river bank and pond is. “Then 30 seconds later, there was another scream. “She must have screamed seven or eight times. “All of the screams had gaps between them. The screams must have gone on for about 15 minutes. They sounded eerie, they sounded dark. “Then I saw a male running.” Locals say the park is always full of youngsters drinking and taking drugs, so unusual sounds tend to be ignored.
Police have been searching the park since last Friday.
A forensics officer was seen taking samples on the riverbank yesterday and search teams scoured undergrowth in the area.
Red flags were put at the top of stone steps leading to the river. It is believed the university’s boating club used them in years gone by and there is a derelict boathouse nearby.
Officers raided the rented home of bacon factory worker Pawel Relowicz at about 10pm on Wednesday evening.
The Polish national lives with his wife Jagoda, 24, and their two children less than a mile from where Libby was last seen.
A silver Vauxhall Astra was towed away after the police raid.
Libby’s parents Lisa, 48, and Russell, 53, have travelled from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, and are being cared for by specialist officers.
Detective Superintendent Matt Hutchinson said police are keeping an open mind, adding: “We are still treating Libby’s disappearance as a missing person’s inquiry.”
