THE JIMEOIN VARIETY SHOW
THE randomness of a Jimeoin show is a huge part of his appeal. Dancing, impressions, visual gags, one liners, stories, songs – in a word, variety.
The popular Edinburgh Fringe stand-up, 53, also likes a k*** gag – which, to some of those performing at the world’s biggest arts festival, would be a no-no.
Jimeoin laughed: “What are they thinking? You’ve got to go for the jugular every once in a while. It’s about light and shade. Go for the jugular. K*** gag. Good night!”
Currently in Scotland with his show, Jiemoin played his 25th Fringe last year and is on his eighth annual UK tour. His latest, Result!, is what we love best about him. Unstructured, unpolished, with no message and no Brexit. The twinkly-eyed Northern Irishman emigrated to Australia 30 years ago and fell into comedy shortly afterwards. Comedy fads have come and gone but Jimeoin is still standing. And making us laugh. The new UK and Irish tour comprises the best of his two latest Edinburgh hours. And, reckons Jimeoin, touring’s in-built safety valve of an interval works well for his type of comedy – and his audience.
He explained: “I’m starting to feel that an hour might be too long. Concentration spans are getting shorter. An hour’s pushing it, especially when it’s nonsensical stuff.
“Let’s keep it loose and recognise that everyone’s had a drink. Forty-five minutes, break, 45 minutes. It just works for the bladder.” ● Jimeoin – Result! is on tonight at the Glasgow Pavilion, tomorrow at Queens Hall Edinburgh and Webster Theatre, Arbroath on Sunday.
