There are certain subjects that go straight to your heart and this is one of them. “I actually think this character is the most difficult I have had in my entire career because she is in a horrible state of desperatio­n, pain and horror for almost the entire movie. “Some of those scenes required me to get into such a dark, painful place. “I knew stories of women and men who had been in situations like this and I knew it would break my heart to do a movie about this but you just have to jump into that pool of darkness. “Of course it’s going to hurt but you have to honour the people that, unfortunat­ely, have to go through such a horrible amount of pain. You have to go into those places.” Thankfully, she had her husband to get her through some of the darkest part of the movie and what resonated most about the story are relationsh­ips and family being “the biggest school in life”. She added: “Family is the place where you learn the most, be challenged the most, because the people that know you are the people that will tell you the truth. “Family is the biggest school in life.” SHE was 19 and he was 44 when they met on the set of To Have and Have Not in 1943. They wed in 1945 and were together until his death in 1957. The couple went on to appear in The Big Sleep, Dark Passage and Key Largo. THEY had a 26-year relationsh­ip which included nine films together despite the actor never divorcing his wife.
