Weir wades into tackle row as Gers keeper gears up for Hampden date

-

ALLAN McGREGOR could never be described as a shrinking violet. Davie Weir played in front of the Rangers keeper for long enough to know his No.1 could look after himself when the studs were starting to fly. But even so the former Ibrox skipper believes the SFA will be attempting to prove the impossible if they choose to throw the book at McGregor today for his flashpoint with Lewis Ferguson. McGregor stands accused of deliberately attempting to leave one on the Aberdeen youngster during a fiery BY KEITH JACKSON encounter last Wednesday night at Pittodrie.

The veteran has already rejected a two-game ban after being hauled up by the compliance officer and today McGregor will make the case for the defence at a hearing on Hampden’s sixth floor. But Weir is surprised it’s even got this far.

Speaking exclusively to Record Sport yesterday, the club Hall of Famer suggested our game’s governing body might be straying into dangerous territory if they are attempting to read what’s going on inside McGregor’s mind.

Weir said: “As far as I’m concerned it’s inconclusive. It’s up for debate rather than being a clear-cut incident where there is no doubt about his intentions.

“Listen I’m not saying Allan is an angel because he’s not. But if people are trying to say he has set out with the intention of trying to hurt someone – which is what I can only imagine the case against him will be – then that’s well wide of the mark.”
