THE FIVE BIGGEST MAKE-UP MISTAKES

& HOW TO AVOID THEM

using too much of it. “If you try to cover dark circles with a thick layer of concealer, they will simply look worse,” she says.

“Instead, dot concealer below your eyes and blend it gently upwards. Another good tip is to apply a little, allow to dry, then apply again if needed.”

She adds: “There are no hard and fast rules about whether to apply foundation or concealer first.

“What is really important is to ensure the two products work seamlessly together.

“If they don’t, the concealer will sit on the surface of the skin and be visible. For example, a concealer with a dry texture applied over a luminous foundation will instantly stand out.” CLUMPY MASCARA Long lashes will open up your eyes and make them appear wider. However, it’s easy to use too much or the wrong formula and end up with clumpy, heavy-looking lashes.

Caroline insists it all comes down to choosing the right product and knowing how to apply it.

“Before you start, wipe any excess mascara off the wand with a tissue,” she says. “This will stop you applying too much and overloading the lashes. Then wiggle the brush back and forth at the base before lightly brushing mascara to the tips.

“Try to wedge the mascara deep into the root of the lashes. The aim is to coat them densely at the base and lightly at the top.

“If you load up the tips of the lashes, you’ll weigh the eyes down.”

Caroline recommends Max Factor Masterpiece Lash Crown Defining Mascara, £10.99, Boots. “The wand has no bristles on one side so you can press the mascara into the roots and create a good shape,” she says. FOUNDATION FAIL It’s really important to make sure your foundation is the perfect base for your skin tone. Too orange or dark and you’ll end up with an obvious line along your jaw. Too pale and you’ll end up looking washed out, which is ageing.

Caroline’s top tip is to remember to make sure that, once you’ve applied foundation, your face matches your neck and chest.

She says: “When I work with a client, I start by looking at the skin tone on the face, chest, neck and shoulders. Then I think about which colour foundation to use.

“Always test foundation in natural daylight and apply to your face rather than your arm or wrist.” SUIT YOUR SKIN TYPE There’s nothing worse than spending money on a new product to find it doesn’t work. Nine times out of 10, it’s because what you’ve bought doesn’t suit your skin type.

With so many variations, from liquids to mousses and gels, it can be overwhelming to know where to start.

“For dry skin, opt for liquid or cream products as they will hydrate the skin and lock in moisture throughout the day,” says Caroline.

“For oily to combination skin, choose a powder-based formula or an oil-free liquid. This will absorb excess oil and balance skin throughout the day.”
