Stricker’s got to peace together a disjointed team
New skipper’s diplomatic skills could be key to finding the unity USA desperately need
STEVE STRICKER’S tears during his coronation as America’s next Ryder Cup captain sums up why he’s the man to make the crowd dance to his tune at Whistling Straits.
The emotional resonance of having a local boy lead the nation in his home state of Wisconsin is far from the only box the 51-year-old ticks.
But it could prove the most vital as Team America seeks a cause to inspire and unite behind after the wretched atmosphere of acrimony that again reared its head after Paris last October.
There will be an unwanted legacy from Patrick Reed calling out Jordan Spieth for not wanting to play with him, based on the likely assumption both men will make this team once again.
Even Reed’s criticism of 2018 captain Jim Furyk for not forcing Spieth to resume their successful foursomes partnership will be relevant again with Sticker returning his predecessor to the fold as one of his vice-captains.
Throw in Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson having a post-tournament bust-up and it all points towards Stricker having a tricky diplomatic role on his hands before a ball is struck.
And in such potentially fractious circumstances having an alternative focal point of the homeboy made good starring in front of his own folk plays out well.
Even more crucially when you consider his opposite number, Padraig Harrington, can count on a strong wave of support from the Irish community that populates America’s north east coast in vast numbers.
At the confirmation of his captaincy, Stricker said: “It’s truly a dream come true. I’m humbled by this opportunity because I’m very passionate about this competition.
“Some people don’t think I’m very fiery but deep down I’m very competitive. We want to win this more than ever.”
There are other compelling
THE VOICE OF GOLF reasons for Stricker. His playing record might not stir the blood.
No Majors to his name and his three Ryder Cup appearances as a player in 2008, ’10 and ’12 ended twice in defeat, most recently when losing all four of his matches
IN RECORD SPORT at Medinah. But this 12-times PGA Tour winner has paid his dues and learned his trade, having served on the last three Ryder Cups behind the scenes as an assistant.
He is also the first captain to have the valuable previous experience of leading a USA side as President’s Cup captain in 2017.
Long-time friend Tiger Woods said: “Stricks was an incredible leader. We have always shared a high level of trust and mutual respect.”
If Stricker can be the ideal peacemaker and pairing picker, Harrington and his ex-pat Irish army will have a fight on their hands.
