RON LEFT A VAR CRY FROM VICTORY

AT MADRID .......... 2 JUVENTUS .......... 0

-

TWO late goals left Juventus facing a Champions League exit as Atletico put one over their nemesis Cristiano Ronaldo.

Jose Maria Giminez pounced six yards out with 12 minutes left and Diego Godin wrapped up victory four minutes later with an effort deflected in off Ronaldo on a night of VAR farce and drama in Madrid.

Juve skipper Giorgio Chiellini won’t rule out qualification still and said: “We must remain calm because we can still do it. We have to reset our minds quickly and try to win in Turin.”

Ronaldo received a predictable reaction from Real’s arch-rival on his return to the city, not least of all because of the 22 times he had scored against them.

Juve were on top in the early exchanges and Ronaldo had one of his trademark free-kicks fisted over by Jan Oblak.

But Atletico worked their way back into a tetchy game and Diego Costa won a penalty – only for German ref Felix Zwayer to reverse his decision on review.

Mattia de Sciglio’s slight tap on Costa’s heel saw him throw himself into the box but it was eventually ruled a free-kick.

In the second half Costa fired inches wide before Antoine Griezmann had a lobbed effort tipped on to the bar.

Alvaro Morata thought he had scored a headed opener for the hosts but the ref somehow or other ruled – on VAR – a foul on Chiellini, before the late drama.
