I’d never leave Gers in the lurch

THE lure of a return to the English Premier League might have been too strong for Brendan Rodgers but Steven Gerrard insists he only has eyes for Rangers.

Gerrard is preparing for a new Old Firm managerial rivalry after just seven months in the Ibrox hotseat following Rodgers’s sudden departure for Leicester.

The Northern Irishman previously bossed in England’s top flight at both Swansea and Liverpool, the latter where Gerrard was his captain.

Gerrard spent virtually his entire playing career in the league and reckons the fact Rodgers has been tempted by a move to the Foxes shows it still has huge appeal.

But the 38-year-old said: “I don’t look at the Premier League, I don’t wish I was in the Premier League, I am very happy here.

“Rangers is massive, Rangers is huge and that’s the reason why I decided to take this opportunit­y. I really appreciate where I sit right now and the job I have here. This is a huge job.

“It seems (the lure of the Premier League has been a big factor) otherwise he would have declined the opportunit­y to talk to Leicester.

“But it’s certainly not the case with myself. I am very happy and settled here and delighted I am the Rangers manager.”

Gerrard’s side are looking to keep the heat on Celtic on the back of Rodgers leaving as they aim to make it nine unbeaten when Dundee visit Ibrox tonight.

Rangers have rattled in 10 goals in back-to-back wins in the Scottish Cup and league and haven’t conceded in their last four games.

And while Gerrard is more concerned with clean sheets than balance sheets, the Ibrox boss was happy to hear positive financial results that showed the club made a £5.2million profit in their half-yearly report.

Much of those figures were down to qualificat­ion for the Europa League group stage and Gerrard admitted he was sceptical when chairman Dave King stressed the importance of achieving that goal at the start of the season.
