But with her higher profile came the prospect of dealing with sexist abuse from trolls on social media.

“There was so much abuse online, HIGH STAKES During debate over work dress code which I still get. It’s hard, but because I’ve seen it happen to other women, it made it less personal. That’s when I realised I was doing the right thing by fighting inequality. It reassured me there was still a need to be campaignin­g.

“This sort of thing is happening to women all of the time. I am not unique in that. Even though the #MeToo movement was so phenomenal and changed so much, it’s actually changed CHARITY Doing Sport Relief with Ferne McCann more for men. It’s punishing men more than believing women and supporting them through stuff, so there is definitely more we have to do.”

Nicola will do a reading at Sunday’s rally, which will call for a global law to protect women from sexual harassment, violence and abuse in the workplace.

An M&S spokesman said delivering to Scotland was an “aspiration” for the partnershi­p.
