Jags will be more than a macho for big Hearts

- BY EUAN McLEAN

GARY CALDWELL has warned Partick Thistle they’ll need brains as much as brawn to win a titanic Scottish Cup battle with muscle-bound Hearts.

The Jags boss watched the Jambos give Celtic a tough time at Tynecastle on Wednesday night with the champions needing a last-gasp strike to snatch at 2-1 win.

The Hoops weren’t the only ones to leave Gorgie with something as Caldwell came away with a full assessment of the scale of the challenge that faces his Championship strugglers in Monday’s quarter-final.

But he believes his players can prevail at Firhill provided they stick to the game plan he’s hatching and have the intelligence to know this will be about more than just matching up physically to Craig Levein’s side.

Caldwell said: “I went to Tynecastle on Wednesday night and they’re a very physical team, with quality and experience.

“It’ll be a huge challenge but one which I believe we can look forward to because we can cause them some problems.

“We have the players to cope with the physical battle but we have to use our heads as well.

“It’s not a macho contest where you want to see who the strongest player on the park is. You want to see who the best team is.

“It’s a massive chance to get to a semi-final and we have to be ready for it.”
