Oakley: I hope Dutch of class keeps me at Accies
GEORGE OAKLEY’s wonder goal for Hamilton in Aberdeen has brought comparisons to Dutch legend Marco Van Basten.
But the Accies ace’s ambitions are far more grounded as he just wants to prove he can cut it in Scotland’s top tier.
The Englishman, a January signing from Inverness, sent Hamilton on their way to a 2-0 win at Pittodrie on Wednesday night with a finish that wasn’t too dissimilar to Van Basten’s famous volley against the Soviet Union in the Euro 88 final.
Oakley said: “The centre half tried to let it run out and I managed to get the right side of him and I just thought, ‘I am going to hit this.’
“I was always told if you don’t shoot then you don’t score. I can’t remember scoring a better one but it was a great feeling to get the goal. I came down to show what I can do.
“I have scored three goals and I just want to show I can play at this level.”
Oakley and fellow striker Mikel Miller did the damage against the Dons.
Manager Brian Rice has asked the pair to copy the famous Liverpool set-up where Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush defended from the front. And former Wimbledon frontman Oakley admits a high work-rate is central to his game.
He said: “Ever since I was a kid I have always been a hard worker and that is the way I am.
“The gaffer saw that in my first year with him at Inverness.
“He knows he will get that every week and that is why I am here at Hamilton. I’ve never doubted myself.”
