Going with Bren didn’t tempt me

-

JOHN KENNEDY insists he was never going to walk out on Celtic with Brendan Rodgers.

And the Hoops No.2 has lifted the lid on the crazy couple of hours when he was handed the job of pulling together a set-up.

Rodgers took Chris Davies, Kolo Toure and Glen Driscoll to Leicester with him but Kennedy wasn’t interested in going.

Instead he was trusted with the task of preparing a backroom staff for Neil Lennon and organising a team to beat Hearts.

Kennedy said: “There wasn’t a moment when I might have gone too. I’ve spent a large chunk of my life here. There’s an emotional attachment.

“I had a great relationship with Brendan. The first I spoke with him about this was Monday morning. He said he was probably going to speak with Leicester and to get ready to take the team.

“Did Brendan speak with the players? No. He left Monday lunchtime after training. Peter Lawwell arrived in the afternoon, discussed the possible plans and told me I was wanted here.

“He told me to prepare the team and if there was an appointment I’d be assistant manager. When the news was first broken to me, there was an hour or two where I was thinking about how I had less than a day to pull a backroom staff together for a game a day later.

“Damien Duff was the first person to come into my mind in terms of having him there. Then I spoke to Neil (Lennon) when I knew he was coming into the role and when I mentioned Damien he said, ‘Perfect.’”
