Group in tombstone plea over lorry smash victims

-

AN ANIMAL rights group has requested a roadside memorial in tribute to 200 sheep who died in a crash.

PETA sent a letter to Dumfries and Galloway Council asking for permission to erect a tombstone at the scene of the crash, which happened when a transport lorry overturned on the A76 between Sanquhar and Thornhill on Tuesday.

The black and white plaque shows an image of a sheep beside the words: “In Memory of the Sheep Who Suffered and Died in a Lorry Accident at This Spot. Try Vegan.”

The charity hopes the move could remind drivers to slow down and travel safely – while pointing out the benefits of going vegan.

PETA director Elisa Allen by JACK AITCHISON said: “For nothing more than some chops, this crash left animals suffering on an already terrifying trip – likely to the abattoir.

“PETA’s roadside memorial can prevent further tragedies, including human ones, by reminding people to drive with care and spare a thought for animals by no longer eating them.”

Police released a shocking image showing the lorry on its side at the side of the road after it overturned.

The driver of the Scania HGV suffered minor injuries.

Anyone who has any information about the collision should contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident 4406 of 25th February 2019.
