Friends pay tribute to tragic teenager
BY SALLY HIND s.hind@dailyrecord.co.uk A TEENAGER has died after falling into a stream.
The boy, named locally as 16-year-old Michael McDowall, was pronounced dead in hospital after being hauled from the water in Kirkintilloch, near Glasgow, on Saturday.
It’s understood a group of teenagers had gathered next to the Luggie Water when the tragedy happened at about 7pm.
Fire crews pulled Michael, from nearby Bishopbriggs, from the stream after being called to the scene.
Police taped off the area over the weekend and were understood to be speaking to the teenager’s friends in a bid to determine what happened.
Friends paid tribute to Michael, a pupil at Bishopbriggs Academy, on social media after his death was confirmed yesterday.
One wrote on Facebook: “RIP Michael McDowall, fly high mate, taken too soon.” Another friend posted: “Rest easy Michael.”
Police yesterday said the death was being treated as unexplained and a post mortem was being carried out to establish the exact cause.
A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “At about 7pm, police were called to a report of a person in the water near to Old Duntiblae Road, Kirkintilloch.
“A 16-year-old male was removed from the water and taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“The death is currently being treated as unexplained.
“The family are aware and a report will be sent to procurator fiscal.”
