CAP ROOKIE IS READY FOR WALE OF TIME

-

SPEED merchant Darcy Graham has become used to leaving markers gasping in his wake.

And as he geared up for his first Scotland start he flagged up his big-stage involvement as “quite breathtaking”.

Boss Gregor Townsend is ready to pitch the youngster into his line-up against Grand Slam seekers Wales on Saturday as the Scots aim to kickstart their campaign.

And 21-year-old Edinburgh ace Graham is determined to prove he should be in Toony’s plans for the World Cup in Japan in the autumn.

Having picked up two caps off the bench, the whizz-kid is relishing his next international challenge.

He said: “Just being part of the set-up has been quite breathtaking.

“I have loved every moment since first being called up for the November series.

“I knew I would have some outstanding wingers to get past in order to be picked to play. And it has been fantastic.”

Graham picked up his second cap from the bench BY DAVID KELSO in the frustrating defeat by France in Paris last month.

And the very thought of squaring up to the unbeaten Welsh fills him with anticipation.

He said: “When I went on against France I just wanted to add some energy to the side.

“Obviously any player is keen to start every game but being a sub offers different chances to add something.”

A maiden competitive start against Wales would be extra special for Graham as their legendary finisher Shane Williams had a big influence on his career.

Graham said: “I grew up watching him and considering his size he was a truly amazing guy.

“I would go as far as to say he was my sporting hero because he showed height and weight don’t count for everything in top-class rugby.

“For someone like me it is not all about running at bodies – but more about finding that space.

“I also like to seek out big men in the opposition and use my speed.”
