UTD BOO BOYS KNEW WHEN IT WASCOLLOVER

- BY IAIN MACFARLANE

COLL DONALDSON has revealed he lapped up the chance to silence the Dundee United boo boys – even if his joy masked the pain of a semi-final ban.

The Inverness stopper took pelters from the home support throughout Sunday’s Scottish Cup quarter-final at Tannadice.

Donaldson endured a miserable time at United after joining from QPR in 2015. He stayed only two years of his three-year deal before being released to join Inverness.

But the former Arabs defender had the last laugh on the haters with Aaron Doran’s stoppage-time goal earning the Highland side a 2-1 win and a place in the last four.

Donaldson will have to miss the Hampden date against Hearts or Partick Thistle after picking up a yellow for dissent as he argued over the award of a United spot-kick.

That sticks in his craw and will hurt more come the big day but for now he can revel in the win and the fact he got to party in front of the fans who gave him dog’s abuse.

Donaldson laughed and said: “A bit of banter – is that what it is now?

“They are entitled to their opinions. I’m a football fan so I know what it’s like, not everyone can be a fans’ favourite and I certainly wasn’t here.

“I’m not looking to dwell on that. I’m an Inverness player now and I love playing for the club.

“It’s a fantastic result for the club. I enjoyed that. My reaction to the final whistle speaks for itself. I have spoken previously about my time at United – it wasn’t a good time for me.

“But it’s about how you react. Coming to Tannadice and winning a Scottish Cup quarter-final might, but probably won’t, shut a few people up.”

Donaldson was rock solid at the heart of his defence and showed the form that saw him win a move to England from Livingston as a teenager.

The only downside came when Donaldson was carded by Steven McLean for contesting the penalty, earned when Paul McMullan went down easily after contact with Jordan White.

Donaldson tried hard to bite his tongue and claims he didn’t overstep the mark but feels he was the unlucky player to be singled out from a group of protestors.

He said: “He said to me on the pitch I was a casualty of four or five boys because the way we’ve reacted wasn’t great.

“One of us was going to pay the price and it’s just a shame it was me.”
