RUGBY COUPLE BACK CAMPAIGN

Jenny on managing her depression

- BY ALAN McEWEN alan.mcewen@reachplc.com

THE wife of Scottish rugby legend Scott Hastings has spoken about her ongoing battle against depression – as the couple backed a campaign to raise mental health awareness.

Jenny Hastings, 54, has spent more than 20 years fighting depressive episodes, which at one point drove her to attempt suicide.

She spoke of trying to “cover up” her depression, while Scott, 54, admitted he used to be “embarrassed” to discuss his wife’s mental health with her.

The Hastings now say their open dialogue about Jenny’s difficulties has been key in coping with them.

They are ambassadors for charity Support in Mind Scotland and yesterday launched its 100 Street Challenge, which encourages participants to walk, run or cycle 100 streets in their community between April 1 and World Mental Health Day on October 10.

The couple want to help underline the benefits of exercise in boosting mental health.

In 2014, Jenny tried to kill herself. And two years ago, she went missing from their Edinburgh home for more than 24 hours, sparking fears for her safety.

The mum of two admitted her struggle with depression continues, but she has

become better at managing it. She said: “People used to say to me, ‘Why are you on a downer when you have so much going on in life? What’s the problem?’

“My approach was to push through and that’s why it got worse and worse.

“So along with exercise, I try to keep my brain active as well, rather than break down, be exhausted and go down that hill.”

Scott, who played for Scotland 65 times, said: “I’ve learned a lot over the years. I used to be embarrassed even talking about it.

“We have a staying healthy plan and we keep aware of triggers that can affect how Jenny reacts.”
