All about dignity

- BY LUCY CHRISTIE

ASYLUM seekers should be encouraged to work, not blocked.

These are people who want to make a new life in a safer country. Instead, successive governments have made it clear that they are not to be trusted until they’ve put up with even more hardship.

Glasgow City Council is on the right track by saying asylum seekers should have the right to work.

And it’s entirely sensible they should be able to register in the city instead of being told to travel as far as London.

No one benefits from an oppressive system that stops people living with dignity.

ASYLUM seekers could be given the right to work under changes being proposed in Glasgow.

The city welcomes the highest number of asylum seekers of any UK local authority area and is keen to roll out reforms that would allow them to support themselves.

A task force, which includes Home Office and Scottish Refugee Council representatives, has made a number of recommendations.

They include allowing asylum seekers to work from six months after their asylum claim has been submitted until their case has been settled.

Council chief executive Annemarie O’Donnell, who chairs the task force, said the recommendations in the report would mean they could do “much more” to help asylum seekers.
