Yousaf says football clubs must do more

-

BY ANDY PHILIP Political Correspondent FOOTBALL clubs must rid the game of the “vile cancer” of sectarian hatred or face action, Scotland’s Justice Secretary has warned.

Humza Yousaf said the SNP Government will consider options, including measures to penalise clubs for their fans’ behaviour, known as strict liability.

He added: “It is important for football to demonstrate leadership on this issue.

“But if action is not taken, we reserve the right to act to rid this vile cancer from our national game.

“I believe the vast majority of supporters are also frustrated that a small minority are bringing our game into disrepute and are frustrated at the lack of action by the football authorities and clubs.

“While we would prefer football to take action, we are considering a range of options, including the role of strict liability and the licensing of football stadiums.”

Yousaf said he would welcome contributions from the other parties at Holyrood “on how we can work together to address this issue”.

Labour’s James Kelly led the campaign to repeal Holyrood’s controversial law on sectarian hatred at football stadiums.

He said: “Tackling bigotry and hatred needs a wider and more considered discussion and should not be viewed solely through the lens of a football match.”
