ZIGGY SEEKS STARDUST FROM DERBY

-

ZIGGY GORDON believes Hamilton can use Saturday’s Lanarkshire derby to spark their own winning run.

The Accies defender still has a bitter taste in his mouth over December’s 2-1 defeat when they had the chance to close the gap on the Fir Park men to just one point.

Well used that victory as a launchpad for a six-game winning run in the Premiership to end their survival fears and mount a challenge for the top six.

Gordon knows the derby is key to 10th-placed Accies emulating that feat but is confident they can build on their amazing win at Aberdeen.

He said: “I remember the derby really well and I’ve still got a bitter taste in my mouth from that game.

“We went one up and when you do that at home, especially in a derby, you should see the game out.

“But unfortunately we made crucial mistakes at two set-pieces.

“After they beat us they had six league wins in a row. They will be full of confidence but so are we and it will be a good, hard-fought game.

“I expect us to show the levels we have recently. BY MICHAEL BAILLIE What happened in the last derby gives us extra motivation because after that game they went on a great run.

“There was no reason why we couldn’t have done that but it was a crucial turning point in their season as it allowed them to move up the table and left us in the bottom three.

“They opened a sevenpoint gap over us and took belief from that.

“We’ve got 10 games left and there is no reason why we can’t go on a good run like Motherwell did. We aspire to do what they did.

“We know we can beat anyone when we’re at our best and we’ve got a bit of luck on our side.

“We thoroughly deserved the win against Aberdeen, we outfought them and outplayed them at times.

“We got the tactics bang on and we’ll look to do the same against Well.”

Gordon has a wealth of derby experience and knows players need to keep their cool in a red-hot atmosphere.

He said: “You need calmness and players to show maturity. Not getting over-excited and keeping cool heads is key.”
