Robbers target ex-Celt’s home as family sleep
EX-CELTIC boss Brendan Rodgers’s wife Charlotte and stepdaughter Lola barricaded themselves in a bathroom after waking to find raiders at the end of their bed.
BRENDAN Rodgers’s wife and stepdaughter are “incredibly shaken up” after intruders burst into their bedroom as they slept.
Terrified Charlotte and six-year-old Lola jumped out of bed and ran screaming to a bathroom, where they locked themselves in as the raiders ransacked the house.
A source said: “It was a horrifying experience for them.”
Lola was sleeping with her mum in the master bedroom while her stepdad was away when the intruders broke in at about 1.55am yesterday.
The mum and daughter woke up when the robbers stormed into the bedroom, shining torches as they scanned the room looking for valuables.
Our source added: “Charlotte and Lola are incredibly shaken up, which is understandable after what they’ve just been put through.
“Since Brendan left, Lola has been sleeping with her mum, so they were in bed together when the men came into the bedroom.
“Charlotte was still half asleep as it was in the middle of the night, but when she realised there were two men in the room holding a torch, she screamed and then ran with Lola to the bathroom and locked the door.”
Police are investigating the raid in the luxury house in Bearsden, near Glasgow, which took place just a week after Rodgers left Celtic for Leicester City.
The robbers made off with a number of high-value items. It’s understood they also appeared to target sentimental Celtic memorabilia from Rodgers’s two-and-a-half years in charge of the Parkhead club.
A local, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “It is shocking – as if he has not been through enough with all the abuse he got after he left Celtic.
“It is a lovely house. It seems as if the thieves knew what they were doing.”
The huge ranch-style home is reportedly one of the most expensive residences in the area.
Our source added: “Charlotte had been down south with Brendan for a few days after he moved to Leicester and it seems likely that the house was being cased out during that time.
“She had been worried about staying in the house alone but Brendan assured her everything would be OK.
“Perhaps an assumption was made that the house was lying empty.
“They took some stuff from downstairs and a lot of Celtic memorabilia.
“But it wasn’t until they went upstairs that Charlotte realised what was going on. You can imagine how she’s feeling now.
“The plan had been for Lola to stay in school in Scotland for the time being. But it looks as if that is going to have to change now as Brendan is obviously pretty distressed at the thought of leaving them on their own after an ordeal like this.”
During a trophy-laden spell, Rodgers, 46, became the first manager in the history of Scottish football to win back-to-back domestic trebles.
But he faced a furious backlash from the club’s supporters after
making the shock decision to leave them for Leicester, with his side still on course to complete a historic third successive clean sweep of Scotland’s major silverware.
Less than 24 hours after he quit the job, Celtic supporters unveiled a banner branding Rodgers a “fraud”.
Police have also been investigating vile video footage posted online of a group of Hoops fans in an Edinburgh pub on that same night chanting for Rodgers to be shot dead in his sleep by “a bullet from the IRA”.
Security was being beefed up at the family home yesterday.
Last night, a police spokesman said: “At around 1.55am on Wednesday, we received a report of a break-in at a property in Drymen Road, Bearsden. No one was injured but a number of items were stolen from the property.
“An investigation is under way and inquiries are ongoing.”
